Academic Exchange
The 'Laboratory of Architectural Planning' at the Faculty of Engineering, Hokkaido University, Japan under the leadership of Professor Dr. Sugaru Mori and Asso. Prof. Dr. Rie Nomura has initiated an exchange of learning and research possibilities with global institutions in the field of architecture and planning.
Technical Staff Dr. Gaurab Das Mahapatra is also involved in this project as the principal communicator and event organization support.
The main goal of this program is to provide exciting opportunities for students and researchers to learn from the overseas exchange of knowledge.
SYMPOSIUM
On 23-24 December 2022, our laboratory conducted a 2-Day International Symposium titled 'Design For All' on Re-Understanding SDG 11 with 16 speakers affiliated with 14 world-reputed organizations from 7 different nations.
The total participants were 122 from 54 different cities across the world, located in 19 different countries. The proceedings were published by COPAL PUBLISHING, India and the publication is freely downloadable through the link: https://imojo.in/ngrXf6.

Cross Country Collaborative Research Program (CCCRP) with SPA-Bhopal, India
Since the Spring-Summer Session of 2023, our laboratory has entered into a Cross Country Collaborative Research Program (CCCRP) with the Center for Human Centric Research at the School of Planning and Architecture (SPA), Bhopal, India headed by Professor Dr. Rachna Khare.
As a part of the collaboration, Dr. Rachna Khare and Dr. Parama Mitra delivered a lecture for the Hokkaido University students on 27 July 2023 titled 'Universal Design Exploration in Cultural Context: Case Example of City Palace Complex of Udaipur, India'.
Similarly, Dr. Gaurab delivered a lecture titled 'UNIVERSAL DESIGN: the understanding and application' to the students of SPA Bhopal on 2 August 2023.
Also, the students from both institutions were working on a similar assignment topic involving the assessment of accessibility of institutional campuses using simulation techniques.
As a part of this, the students of Hokkaido University shared their research findings with their Indian counterparts on 2 August 2023 and received comments from Dr. Khare. Similarly, on 22 August 2023, the students from SPA Bhopal shared their research findings with their Japanese counterparts and received comments from Dr. Mori.
Cross Country Collaborative Research Program (CCCRP) with IIT Kharagpur, India
Starting from the Fall-Winter Session of 2023, our laboratory has entered another Cross Country Collaborative Research Program (CCCRP) with the Department of Architecture and Regional Planning at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur, India led by Professor Dr. Subrata Chattopadhyay and Professor Dr. Haimanti Banerji.
The collaboration will range from faculty/ student exchange to the joint research program.
Most importantly, the students in Japan and India in the field of the architecture/planning fraternity shall benefit a lot from this venture.
To mark the beginning of this collaboration, Dr. Mori is giving a lecture on 'Community-led initiative and relocation following the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami' on Monday 13th November 2023 from 14:30 - 15:30 JST to the students at IIT Kharagpur.
Similarly on Thursday 14th December 2023, Hokkaido University delightfully hosted an online lecture by Prof. Dr. Subrata Chattopadhyay and Prof. Dr. Haimanti Banerji from the Department of Architecture and Regional Planning at the IIT Kharagpur, India; titled "A human-centered approach to improve the livability of bamboo houses for Rural and Peri-urban people in Eastern India through Co-design and Co-innovation".
In 2024, Dr. Mori is travelling to IIT Kharagpur, India for academic purposes; and eventually, Dr. Banerji and Dr. Chattopadhyay is coming to Hokkaido University, Japan to be a part of the Hokkaido Summer Institute.

On Wednesday 31st January 2024, we at the Laboratory of Architecture + Planning, Hokkaido University, Hokkaido University, Japan under the leadership of Professor Dr. Suguru Mori and Associate Prof. Dr. Rie Nomura gleefully hosted an architectural workshop by eminent Architect Artist Singer-Songwriter Mr. Nilanjan Mandal from Kolkata, India. Special thanks to Yannick Oliveira for translating the entire workshop.
He used different mediums to illustrate the art of conceptualizing architectural understanding. We also hosted his amazing artwork alongside. The students were amazed at his amazing skills and techniques. A few glimpses of the event are shared below.
